Class Descriptions

Ballet
Pre Ballet: Ages 4-5
Basic ballet for the beginning student. Students will be introduced to the technique and vocabulary of classical ballet in preparation for continued study in Level I and Level II. This is not a creative movement class, this is a structured classical ballet class.
Level One Ballet: Ages 6-8
Pre-requisite: One to two years of prior classical ballet training.
Level Two Ballet: Ages 8-11
Pre-requisite: Two to three years of prior classical ballet training. **Placement class required for admission to this level.**
Level Three Ballet: Ages 10-13 **Placement class required for admission to this level.**
Level Four Ballet: Pre professional level Ages 13 – adult **Placement class required for admission to this level**
Basic Ballet: This is a beginner class. Ages 12-adult. This class focuses on the foundations of classical ballet with proper attention to placement, alignment, technique, and classical vocabulary. Perfect for the student that needs to focus on their basics or a student that has been away from dance for awhile. This is also a wonderful class for adults that have had some dance background and are looking to get back into class.
Jazz & Tap
Level I Jazz/Tap combo: Ages 6-8. An introductory level of jazz and tap exposing students to the basic technique of jazz and tap. Perfect for the beginning student. This class prepares students for advancement to the Level II & III Jazz and Tap classes.
Level II Tap: Ages 7-9. One to two years of prior tap training. An intermediate class.
Level III-B Jazz: Ages 9-12. Three to four years of prior jazz training. A int/adv. Level.
Advanced Tap: Ages 11-adult. Advanced Tap. Placement class required for admission to this level.
Level III-A Jazz: Ages 10-13. Advanced Jazz. Placement class required for admission to this level.
Level IV Jazz: Ages 12-adult. Pre professional level. Placement class required for admission to this level.
Modern
Young Modern: Ages 9-12. Introduces students to the foundational technique of modern/contemporary dance. Previous movement background helpful but not required.
Advanced Modern: Ages 12-adult. Pre professional level. Placement class required for admission to this level.
Character
Beginning Character: Character dance introduces students to many folk dances from around the world as well as character choreography from many classical ballets. This class will improve the dancers musicality, rhythm, and overall performance quality. This is a fun class with an upbeat pace and a favorite amongst our young dancers!
Advanced Character: Continues to advance the skills introduced in beginning character and is taught on an advanced level. Placement class required for admission to this level.
Musical Theatre
Musical Theatre: Ages 9-14: Musical theatre is the perfect class for those looking for exposure to theatre dance styles, acting exercises, and introductory vocal work. Each week the class will focus on a different area of Musical Theatre. This is an introductory class and does not require any previous training in any of the afore mentioned areas. By the end of the year, students should feel confident attending an audition for a youth play or musical.
Hip Hop
Hip Hop: Ages 10-adult: Hip Hop is perfect for the student that really wants to GET MOVING! A high energy class that exposes students to commercial street dance. Prior experience with movement is helpful, but not required.
Competitive Dance
Mini Jazz Ages 7-9: Students in Mini Jazz are selected by the studio. This is a choreography session for dancers in the Sullivan Youth Ensemble. Sullivan Youth Ensemble is the studio’s pre professional performance group with a focus in competitive dance. Contact our office for placement information for the 2011-2012 season.
Troupe: Ages 10-12: Students in Troupe are selected by the studio. This is a choreography session for dancers in the Sullivan Youth Ensemble. Choreography focuses on lyrical, contemporary, and classic jazz styles. Sullivan Youth Ensemble is the studio’s pre professional performance group with a focus in competitive dance. Ensemble: Ages 13-18: Students in Ensemble are selected by the studio. This is a choreography session for dancers in the Sullivan Youth Ensemble.
